Niranjan advises technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) clients on a range of corporate, commercial and regulatory matters, including M&A and joint ventures across the Asia-Pacific region. He also advises non-technology clients as they embrace digitisation and move into adjacent sectors. He is co-head of the firm’s TMT sector.

Formerly, Niranjan was a partner at Allens, with whom Linklaters has a close association, for 16 years. At various times, he has been based in Australia, Hong Kong, Shanghai and currently Singapore, developing longstanding relationships with TMT clients in all of these centres.

Work Highlights
Niranjan has led on many of the region’s most significant transactions in the TMT sector. These include advising:

- The Walt Disney Company on its joint venture with SK Telecom to create two Korean-language children’s pay TV channels and on its acquisition of GameStar, a games development company based in Shanghai and Wuhan

- Hutchison Telecommunications on the establishment of its joint venture with Hanoi Telecom in Vietnam, including the rollout of a nationwide mobile network

- Vimpelcom on its acquisition of Sotelco, a Cambodian mobile operator

- Experian on various acquisitions and joint ventures in China, including the acquisition of Hong Kong-based Smartal and a joint venture with Beijing-based SinoTrust

- STAR TV on the acquisition of an interest in Indonesian free-to-air broadcaster ANTV and on its joint venture arrangements with TATA Sons to create a direct-to-home pay TV channel in India

- a major global broadcaster on an investment in a Chinese magazine publisher

- Sumitomo and Japanese mobile operator KDDI on their investment in Myanmar Post and Telecommunications, Myanmar’s largest telecommunications operator

- Blackhawk Networks on its investment in Shanghai-based payments provider China Express

- Hutchison Telecommunications on its joint venture with TransIndonesia Network for the rollout of a fibre network in Sumatra 

- CBS on its joint venture with TEN Network to create one of Australia’s first digital TV channel, Channel Eleven

- National Broadband Network on various issues with the rollout of a government-owned, open access, wholesale superfast broadband network
