Top TMT M&A deals in Asia valued at over 200 billion USD in 2018

Asian TMT deal makers have been busier than ever this year as figures indicate an approximate fourfold increase in transaction values year on year. According to TMT Finance deal data,  over 200 billion US dollars worth of TMT transactions were announced or closed in Asia in 2018, with the year’s top TMT deals all registering in the tens of billions. This figure includes all M&As, IPOs, loans, bonds and fundraisings of US$20m or more in Asia, as reported by TMT Finance.

“2018 was a bumper year for dealmaking in Asia TMT, with total announced transactions soaring from around US$50bn in 2017 to over US$200bn in 2018,” said Yedda Wang, Asia Editor, TMT Finance.

As well as a rise in the number of deals announced, this huge rise in activity was characterised by an increase in super sized M&A deals that bumped up the overall transaction volume for the region. Wang observes, “Notable M&A transactions include Vodafone India’s merger with Idea, worth US$23bn; SK Hynix and Bain Capital’s acquisition of Toshiba’s memory chip unit for US$18bn; Walmart’s deal to acquire Flipkart in India for US$16bn; and TPG Telecom and Vodafone Hutchison Australia’s US$15bn merger.”

As well as the surge in mega M&A deals, there has been a serious uptick in the number of top TMT deals and volume of investment in the technology space, which looks set to continue, gathering pace throughout the next year. “Tech giants Ant Financial, Didi and Go-Jek all snagged multi billion dollar fundraising rounds; plus we saw huge IPOs by China Tower Corp, Xiaomi and Meituan Dianping. Our sources are predicting more of the same into 2019,” Wang added.
